February may be the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t say anything about the size of our newsletter 😉
Yesterday, on the first snowy day of the year, they’re kicked out because the house is declared “uninhabitable” by the municipality. What about the snowy streets? How uninhabitable are they??
Result: An abandoned house and families on the streets during the coldest period of the year. 👏
Allee du Kaai: Claim our quay!
Allee du Kaai’s outside spaces can use some extra activities for this spring and summer. Especially the cobble quay alongside the canal because soon there won’t be cars passing by anymore. (hooray!) So if you’d like to open a permanent plant market, a vegetable garden, or if you’d like to fill the quay with inflatable swimming pools… It’s possible! Can you feel the ideas coming up? Send a mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. We’re looking forward to hearing your suggestions!
Allée du Kaai: Singa Blabla
Allée du Kaai has a new partner! On Thursday evening everybody is welcome to join a Singa BlaBla gathering. Singa Blabla brings new citizens in contact with other citizens, so they can meet new people and practice French/Dutch in an informal way. This activity is free and open for all. You don’t have to register in advance. Just pass by!
Cinema Biestebroek: The Afterlife of Religious Buildings
Religious communities such as monasteries are the oldest existing co-housing and co-working communities. But what to do with these religious buildings now that the number of original users/inhabitants keeps on decreasing? Which social needs can they fulfill now that they’re becoming empty? Is it possible to preserve their collective aspects?

Allée du Kaai: Conférence Gesticulée
The first ‘Conférence gesticulée’ was a big success so we’re already looking forward to the next one! This time they will talk/discuss/perform about the right to housing and how little we actually know about this law (which is actually based on a universal human right). Where do you sleep? And what do you pay for all that sleeping? Interested? Come over and join!

Toestand: Women in public space
Our aim is always to create (or contribute to) places in the city where everybody feels welcome and free to be themselves. But our experience tells us that there’s still a long way to go, not only regarding equality of origin, class or religion but also regarding gender equality, especially in public spaces. Therefore we would like to organise a week that focusses on women in public space and everything that goes along. Since we’re no experts ourselves, we would like to involve as many organisations and individuals who feel related to this topic. Interested in contributing and making this week as interesting as possible? Come over to our first gathering to discuss all of this.

10:00 – 12:00 or 18:00 – 20:00 (depending of de availability of the people who like to join)

Toestand International: Tetova, Macedonia 2018
On August 6th, we took off for Tetova with a group of about thirty Belgian volunteers. Our objective? To transform two abandoned spaces (indoor/outdoor) into a socio-cultural centre. In Tetova about ten Kosovar volunteers of Termokiss joined us, along with some friends from Switzerland and our local partner Democracy Lab. The result of one week of hard labour? A brand new space complete with a small library, a music room and a cosy skate park where you can also play chess and relax on the ‘hill to chill’. From the moment we left, locals started to add finishing touches while some youngsters were preparing graffiti drawings… It feels good to know that the socio-cultural space & skate park we created together are in good hands. Thanks to everyone involved for the hard work and the good energy!
